Some events, some endings, prompt me
to pay tribute.Inspiration usually strikes
soon after the news has broken, mostly
waking me around three in the morning.
Bleary-eyed I scribble these down by
hand, in my own form of 'poetry'.
Purists beware, I make no claim to
the title 'poet'!
SCOTTY
Who will beam me up
now that you have gone?
Who can I rely on
to keep me safe,
as my particles
disintegrate?
Now when I board
with my pass
to fly business class,
it won’t be the same.
I’ll still whisper your name
and close my eyes.
But...surprise, surprise;
all my parts will remain
on the aeroplane.
And my wish won’t come true.
Because you
have beamed yourself up,
Scotty.

This
tribute went up in the satellite payload, carrying the remaining ashes
of James
Doohan into space. Unfortunately the rocket launch failed and
his ashes and my tribute
plunged into the ocean instead, on August 5th 2008. But
it lives on, here.
